Mentoring and Capacity Building
The journey of sustainable growth does not have a finishing line. It is a journey of excellence. So while advisory support can help companies to develop strategies, framework, set roadmap, initiate the journey and make progress, continual excellence can be achieved with capacity building of the their own teams.
ESG is not a separate function or specialization. It is ideally to be embedded in the processes followed by the typical functional teams like Operations / Manufacturing / EHS / HR / Legal / Secretarial / Procurement / Marketing / Sales / Risk Management / R&D and Facilities Management.
Depending on the size of the company, number of locations and ESG maturity level, a company may select an appropriate number of representatives from each of these relevant functions to form their focused ESG team. The team can get mentored and trained through theoretical knowledge and concept building; case studies and problem solving; strategy and framework development; hand holding in implementing sustainability initiatives; disclosures and participation in global initiatives and rating like SBTi / CDP / Ecovadis / MSCI / S&P and others. Typically such capacity building may span over couple of years and then the trained team is expected to lead the journey of ESG forward for the company
Futurestation mentoring process
The mentoring process is customized in consultation with our clients. Typically we follow the following steps
- Understand the level of ESG maturity of the client through discussions and study of publicly available data / information.
- Suggest to client composition of the trainee team – representing functions and locations
- Request client to set up an ESG steering committee comprising few CXOs to oversee the process, review progress and suggest course corrections, if any.
- Set up a learning calendar and obtain client’s approval. Set up a target future state at the end of learning calendar vis-à-vis the current state
- Set up a weekly training schedule – typically 90 minutes per person covering everyone in two batches
- Start mentoring after agreement with client
- The progress is presented to the steering committee every month and feedback is obtained / necessary adjustments are made as appropriate
- Majority of the training are carried out on-line
- Typical disclosures made by the client’s team, reviewed by us are CDP Climate and Water, SBTi plan, ESG Report, Climate risk and opportunity report similar to TCFD, GHG accounting and management plan, product carbon footprint et al.
